In a conversation with Seema Dhawan, Padma Shri awardee Chef Sanjeev Kapoor shares his remarkable journey, offering insights into his unconventional path to culinary stardom.
Following Passion Despite Norms
Chef Kapoor’s journey began amidst the societal pressure to conform to traditional career paths.
When asked about his parents’ response to his career choice in the culinary field, which deviated from the societal norms of getting into engineering or medicine, he said, “My motto was to do something different. I never wanted to be a regular doctor or engineer. I told my parents about my inclination, and they said, don’t be bothered by what others say. Just do what you want to do, and you should be okay.”
“But, I did not know what being a chef involved. So, I thought of doing something different like pursuing architecture. When I was preparing for the architecture entrance exam, I found myself on the waitlist,” he shares.
“This unexpected turn of events propelled me to explore other avenues, eventually leading me to the culinary arts. My goal was to pursue a different course, but the chef course seemed to fit that criterion,” he adds.
