Nuts About...Doughnuts
Bakery Review
|December-January 2025
In this continuously changing world, the Indian bakery industry is also increasingly undergoing transformation and introducing products that are appealing and healthy for the consumers. One of the acclaimed welcome changes has been the constant variations that have been taking place in the production of doughnuts. The desire and demand for doughnuts has thus been increasing over the years. The growing millennial population, the increasing segment of QSRs are some of the other factors contributing to an increasing demand for doughnuts.
Ashok Malkani contemplates on the rising popularity of the snack-cum-dessert, doughnut.
India, a country that is famous for its animated and exciting food culture, has embraced diverse culinary trends from across the globe. One of them that has captured the hearts of the young and the young at heart is doughnut. It is becoming an increasing trend in the country. As people travel across the globe, delicacies like doughnut, which can be had at any time of the day, are finding an increasing place in the hearts of the people, not only in metropolitan cities in the country but all across the nation.
Pratap Chaudhary, Executive Sous Chef, The Mirador, Mumbai, states, “Doughnuts was a Hollywood dessert for most Indians, they devoured it on screen – with a coffee to go – until ‘Mad over Donuts’ launched its first store in Noida in March 2008.” He continues, “There are several types of doughnuts, each popular with different age groups. The glazed doughnut is most popular with adults, but a chocolate frosted doughnut with sprinkles is also very popular with children, and the coconut doughnut is fairly popular with senior citizens.”
He disclosed “Doughnuts aren’t considered as a breakfast item in India. The American breakfast culture doesn’t apply to every country. Adults in America might prefer a Grab and Go breakfast like doughnut or burger, but Indians are in general very particular about breakfast”.
