ROLL WITH IT

It won't have escaped your notice that the equipment inventory for most gyms now includes recovery items such as foam rollers, massage guns and spikey balls, all of which can be used in self-myofascial release, which growing evidence suggests is essential for maintaining your muscles in peak condition.

ROLL WITH IT

Fascia is the connective tissue that attaches to every organ and bone in your body with that wrapped around and woven within your muscles being specifically referred to as myofascia. It is rich in nerve endings and due to its strength and elasticity, it considerably impacts your posture. It is made up of 3 components: collagen (giving it structure); elastin (making it stretchy): and ground substance (gel that provides fluidity). Its key purpose is support but it also provides connected chains that align the direction of pull for muscle groups during exercise.

When healthy, fascia is in a relaxed state and is able to stretch and move without restriction. However, when you have restrictions, due to injuries, age or poor posture, the fascia solidifies, effectively gluing the tissues together, resulting in that tight feeling in your muscles.
