New titles
Just one day after his mother’s death, King Charles III made the momentous decision to televise the Accession Council for the first time in history. Then, when addressing the nation for the first time as monarch, he named William and Kate as the Prince and Princess of Wales – a title Charles held himself since 1958 and the first time there would be a Princess of Wales since the death of Diana. Charles later appointed himself Captain General of the Royal Marines, replacing his youngest son Harry, and has become The Ranger of Windsor Great Park. The King also increased the number of Counsellors of State by two so that his siblings, Princess Anne and Prince Edward, can deputise on his behalf if necessary.
On his 59th birthday in March, Edward, the King’s youngest brother, was made the Duke of Edinburgh, and his wife Sophie, the Duchess. The title, formerly held by the late Prince Philip, will be his for life, but is not Edward’s to pass on. His son James will inherit his old title of Earl of Wessex.
Sounds and sights of Britain
It will be all change for money, stamps and post boxes, which will feature amended cyphers. Charles will become the second monarch to feature on a Bank of England note, and The Royal Mint is preparing coins featuring his profile. The King will face to the left while the Queen faced right, in line with tradition.
