Here today, gone tomorrow. That pretty much sums up how Karl Stefanovic is feeling right now claims a source, with the Today mainstay reportedly “spewing” that Matt Shirvington has swiped his king of brekkie TV crown.

It’s been five months since Shirvo officially succeeded David Koch on Sunrise. Despite his relative newness to morning television, the former Olympic sprinter has taken to the demanding job like a duck to water. With co-host Nat Barr expertly showing Shirvo the ropes, the Channel Seven juggernaut has continued to out-rate Today in the post-Kochie era – and Karl is seeing red.

“Karl has come through the ranks as a journalist and reporter, and it’s probably a bit irritating to watch Shirvo make his way to the number-one job on breakfast TV by simply being a former athlete with prom-king good looks,” suggests the well-placed insider.

Back in June, after his first week in the hot seat, Shirvo revealed he still hadn’t “heard from Karl yet” regarding his appointment. But our insider says that wasn’t too surprising, as there’s reportedly been underlying tension for more than a decade.
