Although the eagerly awaited head-to-head failed to deliver on policy, the Democratic nominee for the White House took aim at a far more simple part of her opponent.

By the end, US political experts had given the Vice President the win, while bookies elevated her to an odds-on favourite for the election.

From the opening moments she taunted the Republican about the size of his rally crowd. It left the former president stumbling for words and reaching for conspiracy theories.

The most bizarre moment came when he said Haitian immigrants are eating pets in Springfield, Ohio.

Asked about immigration, the convicted fraudster said: "They're eating the dogs, the people that came in, they're eating the cats.

"They're eating the pets of the people that live there."

With the VP shaking her head in disbelief and laughing, he continued: "People are saying their dog was eaten by people."
