Silver stars lead Team GB haul

The Scot, 26, has had a long-running spat with his rival after beating the 2020 Tokyo gold medallist at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

And the man Ingebrigtsen, 23, branded the "Brit who never competes" beat the Norseman at the Stade de France on the biggest stage of all.

But both were beaten at the last by American Cole Hocker.

Heading into the home straight, Kerr was side-by-side with Ingebrigtsen and overtook him. Yet Hocker stunned them both by winning a breathless race and smashing the Olympic record.

Kerr snatched silver, while Ingebrigtsen crossed the line in fourth place.

Ex-1,500m world record holder and 1984 Olympic silver medallist Steve Cram, 63, said: "Kerr did his best but in trying to go with Ingebrigtsen...the two of them tried to destroy each other [and] Hocker stepped up.'

Team GB continued its captivating cycling performances with Jack Carlin, Ed Lowe and Hamish Turnbull winning silver in the team sprint. In a repeat of the Tokyo final three years ago, they were pipped by the Netherlands trio, who set a new world record time.

It follows the historic women's team sprint gold won by Emma Finucane, Sophie Capewell and Katy Marchant on Monday at the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome. Lowe, 20, said: "I'm ecstatic.
