● Express campaign secures 10.1% state pension increase
● UK faces highest tax burden since Second World War
● Billions found to boost NHS, social care and schools
THE state pension triple lock that will help millions cope with the cost-of-living crisis has been honoured after a Daily Express campaign.
Pensions are to rise by 10.1 per cent, their biggest-ever increase, to keep pace with soaring inflation.
The rise of up to £972 will mean retirees receive more than £10,000 a year. Jeremy Hunt acted after 330,000 people backed our petition for the Tories to keep their triple lock manifesto promise. The pension rise was a crumb of comfort in the Chancellor’s bleak Autumn Statement.
Although he found billions for the NHS, social care and schools, tax rises add up to the biggest postwar burden on households already struggling with the cost of living.
Mr Hunt said that he was targeting the more well-off workers while shielding the most vulnerable in society by also linking increases in benefits to inflation.
As campaigners applauded the “stunning” success of the Express and Silver Voices triple lock campaign, he said: “Pensioners can’t earn more money and I recognise the challenges they face.
