Close, but no cigar..

GARY Oldman told how being the only British Oscar-winner this century snubbed by the honours system has left him baffled.

The star may have gongs to his name for acting but awards such as an OBE have eluded him.

Oldman, who won an Oscar in 2018 for his role as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour the year before, admitted he is at a loss about why royal honours have not come his way.

The 66-year-old star said: "I don't know why. You should ask them.

"No nod from the royals but there we are." Speaking to the BBC from his home in Palm Springs, California, he added: "Maybe it's in my future." Oldman has recently been lauded for his role as boozy Jackson Lamb in TV series Slow Horses and is tipped to land his first Emmy for it next month.

But he insisted he has not turned down any royal honours.
