ZHARNEL HUGHES woke up in the Big Apple with a dream and by the time he went back to sleep, it was a reality.
Many had tried and failed over the past 30 years to take Linford Christie's 100m national record.
But after three decades of holding steady, Christie finally had to relinquish his claim when Hughes clocked 9.83 seconds while winning at the New York City Grand Prix.
"I woke up with a dream this morning," Hughes said.
"This morning I woke up with 9.83 on my mind. When I looked at the clock and saw 9.83, I was like, 'What just happened there?' It actually came through.
