Rohit and Co must have learnt a few things from the New Zealand series rout, says the ex-India star
Sandeep Patil has worn many hats in Indian cricket, from a swashbuckling batter to a World Cup star, coach and selector. Each brings its own demand. When he looks back at his long innings in cricket, one of his toughest assignments was as a chief selector during the 2012-13 period, especially after the home Test series against England. Before this defeat against New Zealand, it was the most disappointing chapter in Indian cricket, MS Dhoni-led side losing a Test series at home.
The team consisted of some of India's biggest names, including Sachin Tendulkar. At 39, he along with other seniors like Virender Sehwag and Zaheer Khan was struggling for consistency.
It meant transition was the challenge for the Patil-led committee. They didn't hesitate to take the tough calls, filling the team with young replacements for Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Sehwag and Zaheer. The cycle that started with Patil's panel in 2012-13, is now seeing completion.
