REMEMBERING KAKA KALELKAR, ARCHITECT OF SOCIAL REFORM AND NATIONAL EDUCATION

Revered as a Gandhian scholar, freedom fighter, educationist and champion of social justice, Kalelkar played a pivotal role in shaping public discourse on equality, education and national unity. His influence extended from the classrooms of Gujarat Vidyapith to the corridors of Parliament and the landmark commission that bore his name.

MEETING GANDHI: A TURNING POINT

A defining moment in Kalelkar’s life came in 1915, when he met Mahatma Gandhi. Deeply influenced by Gandhi’s philosophy of truth, non-violence and selfless service, Kalelkar joined the Gandhian movement and became associated with the Sabarmati Ashram.

At the Ashram, he taught at the Rashtriya Shala and contributed to educational and social activities. He also edited publications linked to the Gandhian movement, helping spread ideas of national awakening, social reform and self-reliance. Gandhi valued his dedication and intellectual ability, and the two developed close association that lasted decades.

Like many freedom fighters of his generation, Kalelkar faced imprisonment for participating in the struggle against British rule. Yet prison only strengthened his resolve. For him, freedom was not simply the transfer of political power; it was also the creation of a just and inclusive society.

CHAMPION OF NATIONAL EDUCATION

Among Kalelkar’s most enduring contributions was his work in the field of education.

With Gandhi's encouragement, he played a significant role in the development of Gujarat Vidyapith, the national university founded during the freedom movement to promote education rooted in Indian values and self-reliance. Kalelkar later served as the institution’s Vice-Chancellor from 1928 to 1935.
