It is important to understand that statements about a lack of grid capacity in the Eastern, Western and Northern Cape does not mean that no further renewable projects can from now on be connected, says Ronald Marais, senior manager for strategic network planning at the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA).
It means that space on the network has been reserved for 38 000MW of generation capacity, which is slightly more than the expected national demand by 2030. Of this, 25 000MW relates to future projects.
The congestion refers to the ability to accommodate projects beyond these.
Marais was speaking at the presentation of the Transmission Development Plan (TDP) developed by NTCSA, the Eskom subsidiary responsible for the network infrastructure and management.
It will also develop and manage the future competitive electricity market.
