PLYMOUTH shoppers will begin to "get their city centre back" by Christmas, as work on the stalled £7 million upgrade in New George Street and Old Town Street begins to take shape.
The first rain garden is due to be completed in November and will be open to the public. Contractor Morgan Sindall is working hard to have the first of three New George Street rain gardens, outside House of Fraser, ready by the time the Christmas lights are switched on. Work will continue on the other two rain gardens, but hoardings will come down and replacement fencing will be brought inwards to allow more room for shoppers to pass.
Morgan Sindall has been given a £1.6 million contract extension to carry on with the scheme it took over when another contractor pulled out. Final details for the main contract are being worked on, but this interim contract enables Morgan Sindall to continue work.
