PLYMOUTH has been named as one of Europe’s “most beautiful ugly cities”.
Britain’s Ocean City has been ranked alongside Swansea, Rotterdam and Le Havre by The Independent as places where post-war “eyesore” buildings deserve a reappraisal.
A feature on the news website looked at the four cities because they were substantially rebuilt after suffering major destruction during World War Two. It branded them “previously written-off urbanscapes that are worth another look”.
It calls Plymouth “Britain’s first Beaux-Arts city”, referencing the architectural style taught at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris during the 19th century. It highlights how the rebuild was meant to echo the cities of Washington, New Delhi, Edinburgh and Canberra.
