A new study of data from the Department of Transport between 2012 to 2021 and local authority figures between 2013 to 2022 shows that Plymouth had the fourth-highest proportion of crashes involving intoxicating substances.
Some 8.5% of collisions in Plymouth involved drugs or alcohol, according to the information. It was only behind the Midlands cities of Wolverhampton (9.4%), Leicester (8.8%) and Coventry (also 8.8%). Wrexham, in Wales, had the same proportion of crashes as Plymouth at 8.5%, but was rated fifth on the list.
The top five – including Plymouth – all came out more than three times the national average, which was calculated as 2.4% of accidents.
