ST MELLION VETERANS
With so much going for the players, good score after good came in and then it became just a question of how high a winning score would be.
Captain Ian Edwards had the unenviable task of pairing a high handicapper with a low one so any withdrawals could distort the balance of the team selection.
Luckily there were but a few but they brought together two players not scheduled to be team-mates, Norman Wreford and Keith Field.
The two players dovetailed perfectly and each registered nine holes on which their scores counted and so returned to the clubhouse in upbeat fashion with a total of 50 points to take first place.
As they were out in the middle of the start list they had a long wait to see if their exceptional total would be beaten.
Some 25 teams contested the competition and all of them beat par and 23 beat 40 points in an extraordinary demonstration of high scoring.
