WORK to clear away stacks of felled trees and brush in Plymouth’s Armada Way began at 7am yesterday after months of legal wrangling, with council leader Cllr Tudor Evans saying a consultation into an updated scheme for the area would be launched ‘very shortly’.
More than 100 trees were felled in March by the then Conservative-led council, despite widespread opposition to the scheme and a petition signed by thousands of residents to save the trees.
Work which had started under cover of darkness was halted due to an injunction brought by pressure group Save the Trees of Armada Way – known as Straw – which effectively left the redevelopment of the site in limbo.
Concerns over wildlife which had nested in the stacks of felled trees meant work to fully clear the site was delayed until yesterday, when the council said ecologists gave the green light for the area to be cleared.
The council said contractors carried out the work yesterday, and said they hoped the clearance could be carried out within 24 hours, but added ‘please bear with us’.
