Situated in the easternmost of Europe’s three great southern peninsulas and comprising 11 countries, the Balkans possess a rich history, stunning landscapes and diverse cultures to discerning visitors.

Although there are multiple options to discover the relatively remote region, at least for Indian visitors, travelling through this part of Europe by train allows one to soak it all up at a more relaxed pace. And while every region presents a unique adventure, the Western Balkan countries of Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Montenegro, all intrinsically connected by their shared history as part of Yugoslavia, entice with their distinct appeal.

Rail also presents a more economical and sustainable option. Though not as extensive or high-speed as Western European rail networks, the train network in the Balkans takes one through scenic routes from amidst the mountains, lakes and historic towns.
