I am flooded with memories of thrilling childhood tales spun by Jim Corbett, each one steeped in the allure of the untouched, mysterious woodlands. The expansive grasslands stretch out before me, home to herds of elephants that descend from the majestic Himalayas to frolic in the crystalline waters of the Ramganga River. I envision a tiger stealthily pursuing spotted deer along the cool pathways of the Thandi Sadak, while nearby, a sloth bear roams with her playful cubs clinging to her back. Each element of this magnificent landscape weaves together to make Corbett one of my most cherished places.
Cuddled in the picturesque landscapes of Uttarakhand, India, Jim Corbett National Park holds the prestigious title of being the first national park in India. Established in 1936 as Hailey National Park, it was renamed in 1957 in honour of the world-renowned British hunter, conservationist, humanist and writer Jim Corbett, who played a crucial role in its establishment and advocated for wildlife protection. The park is spread over 521 square kilometers (part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve, which includes adjacent protected areas of 1,288 square kilometers.) and rests at the foothills of the Himalayas, serving as a vital sanctuary for numerous species while showcasing diverse ecosystems ranging from hills, lush green forests, and grasslands to riverbeds.
Corbett is not just a haven for wildlife but also carries immense ecological significance. It is part of the larger Corbett Tiger Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and plays a crucial role in preserving the biodiversity of the region. The park’s inception came at a crucial time when traditional practices of hunting were threatening wildlife, leading to an increased need for regulated conservation practices.

National Parks Of India
India is blessed with a rich tapestry of biodiversity that is both a natural heritage and a national treasure. The concept of national parks in the country traces back to the late 19th century when the importance of conserving wildlife began to take root in the consciousness of the colonial administration. The first national park in India, Hailey National Park (now known as Rajaji National Park), was established in 1936, marking a historic commitment to wildlife conservation. The post-independence era saw an exponential increase in protected areas, primarily driven by a need to conserve India’s unique flora and fauna threatened by rampant industrialization and urbanization.
