Travelling for work, pleasure and holidays is exciting but can also have a downside to it. Maintaining good sleep is essential to make the best enjoyment out of your trip. It is common to struggle with sleep while travelling especially if you cross more than two time zones. There are effects on the sleep clocks due to crossing of time zones which need special attention. Frequent flying and travel with frequent sleep disturbances can increase the risk for cardiac diseases, diabetes, stroke, obesity, hypertension, gastritis and other sleeprelated issues as seen in obstructive sleep apnea.
Fight Jet Lag

Jet lag and Phase syndrome:

Jet lag is a common term for early to delayed phase syndrome commonly associated with long flights where you travel more than 2-3 time zones. The biological sleep clock or circadian rhythm, which usually dictates the body when to sleep and when to be awake, is not able to adjust to the new time zone rapidly resulting in symptoms of jet lag in such cases. Such symptoms are clubbed together under the broad heading of Circadian rhythm disorders.

Symptoms of jet lag:

  • Difficulty in falling asleep and staying asleep called insomnia
  • Daytime fatigues
  • EDS
  • Gastrointestinal problems like gastritis, constipation
  • Mood swings 
  • Impaired performance
  • Poor memory and recall
  • General fatigue
