THE TRAVEL CHAPTER: FOREST BATHING AND A JOURNEY TO ONESELF
WILD RITUALS

Referred by many as a modern Renaissance artist, Dr. Caitlin O'Connell is currently a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty at the Eaton Peabody Lab where she studies elephant low-frequency hearing. She has been researching elephants in the wild for the past thirty years and has authored scores of scientific papers, numerous feature magazine stories, two memoirs, and won awards for her photography and writing. She co-created the acclaimed Smithsonian documentary Elephant King.

Dr. Caitlin provides a fascinating insight into Elephants' interpersonal and social behaviour in her book, Wild Rituals, teaching us how to improve our relationships with people, nature, and ourselves. She shares with the readers of Travellers' World an excerpt of her incredible experience of the world of elephants, apes, zebras, rhinos, lions, whales, flamingos and rhinos during her journeys throughout the Pacific, the Caribbean, and the African savanna.

I was looking out the back window of a Cessna 182 airplane, counting - elephants in a landscape scorched by a recent fire. It was toward the end of the dry season in the Zambezi region of Namibia in 1994. Fires are prevalent during this time, and the clouds burgeoned with the promise of rain. The largest elephant migration still in existence in Africa was about to commence.

A group of fifty elephants was moving from the ashy teak forest, through the acacia open woodland, and toward the Kwando River for a late-afternoon drink. Another fifty were making their way through the riverine forest along the snaking river.

National Parks Of India

India is blessed with a rich tapestry of biodiversity that is both a natural heritage and a national treasure. The concept of national parks in the country traces back to the late 19th century when the importance of conserving wildlife began to take root in the consciousness of the colonial administration. The first national park in India, Hailey National Park (now known as Rajaji National Park), was established in 1936, marking a historic commitment to wildlife conservation. The post-independence era saw an exponential increase in protected areas, primarily driven by a need to conserve India’s unique flora and fauna threatened by rampant industrialization and urbanization.
