THE CORONATION: Setting The Scene

Where

Westminster Abbey has been the location of the British Coronations since Christmas Day in 1066. After the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror wanted to be crowned at the centre of government and also the burial place of his predecessor, believing this added legitimacy to his rule.

The Guests

Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation was a Who's Who of the world's royals and aristocracy. As well as her immediate family, her cousins, the Bowes-Lyon and TeckCambridges were also there. There was also a large contingent from Prince Philip's side the Greek royal family including the Princess and Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg - his sister and brother-in-law, and the Mountbattens. Royals from countries including Bahrain, Norway, Monaco, Iraq and Ethiopia were also in attendance, paying homage to the new Queen.

The Coronation of the King and Queen is likely to have an equally impressive 2,000-strong guestlist. The Crown Prince and Princess of Japan are making their arrangements to attend, according to the country's national news service, as are Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco, and others to be announced.

The Music

Music is a hugely significant part of every Royal event. For this Coronation, 12 new pieces have been commissioned from artists around the UK and the Commonwealth. According to Buckingham Palace, King Charles has shown a particular interest in the day's musical score and personally commissioned some of the new pieces.

Sir Antonio Pappano is the Musical Director of the Royal Opera House and will play the important role of Conductor of the Coronation Orchestra. "His Majesty has chosen a most beautiful and varied programme that I believe will enhance the splendour of this very special occasion," he says. The new score includes six orchestral pieces, five choral commissions and one organ piece.
