THINK yourself well

Could being more mindful cure your wellness worries? It seems the practice of being present and aware can no longer be dismissed as just a fleeting trend. In fact, the growing research behind it is just one of the reasons mindfulness has gained in popularity, says neuroscientist Sally Sheldon, with scans showing the positive effects that it can have on the brain in just a few weeks.

And the best part about this natural alternative to pills? It’s free! Great news for the 12 million Brits* who currently take prescription drugs that they may become reliant on, for issues such as depression, insomnia and pain. Here’s what calming your mind could do for you…

Reduce pain

The link between pain and mindfulness was first discovered in a 1985 study by Professor Jon Kabat-Zinn – who’s known as the master of mindfulness. ‘The results found significant reductions in pain and negative body image,’ says Sally. ‘That’s because we often impose negativity on our pain, making it “feel” worse, which results in depression and anxiety.’

TRY: ‘Combine breathing with relaxing your muscles,’ says Sally. ‘Lie down, and make your way from your head to your toes, relaxing each part as you go.’ Add it to your nightly wind-down routine.
