Chester was named as the world’s most attractive city earlier this year a pretty impressive achievement considering that Venice came second! Wherever you turn in this historic city, there is something to admire. The streets of the centre are cobbled. There are half-timbered pubs and shops, terraces of attractive Georgian houses, and more Roman remains than a legionnaire could shake his spear at.
WALK THE WALLS
Perhaps the best way to see Chester is from its city walls, which date back 2,000 years and were first built by the Romans. A good place to start is by the elaborately decorated clock in Eastgate, which was built to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee in 1897. A complete circuit about two miles takes roughly 45 minutes, but that’s only if you don’t stop to admire the many distractions on the way, which include a Roman amphitheatre, Roman gardens, and views of the River Dee.
