It was fitting that Sinead O'Connor was given a standing ovation during her last public appearance in March. The singer, who died last week aged 56, stepped on stage to rapturous applause to accept an award at Dublin's Choice Music Awards and spoke of how "delighted" she was by the accolade as she smiled and waved at fans.

The award was to honour Sinead's second album, which contained her best-known song, Nothing Compares 2 U, which was a huge worldwide hit and topped the charts in several countries on its 1990 release.

A statement confirming the sad news of her passing was released by family members last Thursday and paid tribute to their "beloved" Sinead.
