The Price of Freedom - In ‘Freedom’ by the French poet, Charles Peguy, God speaks of his concept of a free man. He compares our trials to a ‘father teaching his son how to swim’. Of allowing the child to take in just enough water that is crucial to learning as anything more would be harmful. If we apply this to our lives, the poet points out, He sends trials to be overcome, to be men…On the one hand, they must work out their salvation for themselves.

‘That is the rule. It allows of no exception. - ‘Because then, ‘it would not be interesting. They would not be men’. ‘We want that salvation to be acquired by himself, Himself, man. To be procured by himself.’ While we can draw a parallel to our lives through these lines, closer home, to truly understand the price and meaning of freedom we need
to delve into the minds of freedom fighters like Prabhakar Sinari. In a candid interview he reveals the scars left both internally and externally by the many battles he fought for the liberation of Goa. Our special story recounts those memories and Sinari’s far from upbeat prognosis on the future of Goa as he laments ‘the ugly face of liberation.’ Has our freedom today been too easily taken for granted and misused, he asks. We also celebrate heritage in this issue. Our lead story focuses on a few much admired Indo-Portuguese homes that adorn the countryside and towns.

Last month we hopped on a bike rally for road safety, a major success as our contributor Aaron Cardozo found out. Imagine the sight of 188 bikers thundering down the highway! Still on the road, Sinead MacManus takes us to her hometown in Ireland, a little, quaint village full of interesting tales to tell. In this new segment, foreigners based in Goa recount their fond memories of their home countries. There’s much here to keep you flipping through the pages on a rainy, cloudy day. Enjoy!
