Effective rules

It is critical to understand the water in the tank, so that you can detect if problems are looming early enough. Whether you have a cold water, tropical or marine fish tank, the following rules generally apply:

1 #285 Fresh water is always needed to balance the ecosystem – and add some essential natural minerals into the water.

2 #286 Some essential test levels to understand about your specific aquarium are pH levels, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and oxygen. Be aware that there are many more aspects to marine water; speak to a marine tank specialist for more information.

3 The biggest mistake that is made is not knowing how much water to top up. #287 Municipal water contains chloramines and chlorine, which are deadly for fish – so, you don’t want to add more than 10% fresh water of your tank volume at a time. #288 If you need to do a major clean of the tank, then it’s best to let the water stand for a few days, and preferably in sunshine, so that the chlorine can evaporate.
