A combination of unsurpassed stills with fantastic, if compromised, video

The Canon EOS R5 is finally here after months of leaks and rumours, not to mention teases from the manufacturer itself. No camera in recent memory has received or, dare we say it, deserved this amount of hype. The Canon EOS R5 is a powerhouse performer: its 8K video outclasses many cinema cameras; its shooting speed puts it on a par with the best sport cameras; its 45MP sensor outmuscles all but a few of the best mirrorless cameras; and its eight-stop in-body image stabilisation makes it the new IBIS champion.

Of course, something had to be too good to be true. No sooner had the camera been revealed than the realities hit home regarding its headline video capabilities. Ironically, those red-hot specs are literally too hot for the camera to handle, as the R5 is subject to recording limitations to prevent it from overheating.

1 The R5’s chassis is near-identical to the EOS R’s, but it’s slightly thicker and 70g heavier, in order to accommodate the new IBIS system.

2 Canon claims that the EOS R5’s 45MP image sensor is the highest-resolving of any EOS camera – including the 50.6MP 5DS R.

3 The R5’s electronic viewfinder boasts an impressive 5.69 million dots and 120fps refresh rate – ideal for keeping up with the action.

4 The fully articulating 3.15-inch touchscreen is just brilliant for composing and reviewing, as well as for touch control over settings.

5 Like Canon’s 5-series DSLRs, the EOS R5 possesses both a joystick (replacing the EOS R’s touchbar) and a rear control wheel.
