It's good to start the year with a visit to Retromobile and the London Classiccar show. The former is a personal favourite and a welcome excuse to visitParis. That said, I made my way across town to the London event this yearby a combination of train, boat and cable car, which takes some beating.As for the shows themselves, no matter how lovely the cars, and manywere stunning, not least the one-off metallic green 928 estate car built as a present for Ferry Porsche and shown in Paris, I can't help thinking they don't look their best displayed indoors, and even more so, on carpet. I almost feel the same about summer concours events. They are mostly outdoors, which is an improvement, but what are the cars doing on grass? It's not where they truly belong.
It was on a smaller scale, of course, but I can remember the BMW art cars being displayed on the different levels of a multistorey car park in Hoxton some years ago – now that was a proper venue! The connection between the two, incidentally, is one Herve Poulain.
He was one of the prime movers behind the art cars project – and a serial Le Mans competitor – as well as a founder of the Artcurial auction house. He and his colleagues from said car department topped the bill at Retromobile with a marathon eight-hour sale. Things do seem to take that bit longer in France.

From R To S And Back
No sooner had it left Baurʼs workshop in April ʼ68 than this 911R was back at the factory, this time at the race department, being softened up in S-spec as a one-off road car. Luckily for us – and for race ace Gérard Larrousse on the 1969 Ronde Cévenole – its next owner swiftly had it returned to full R-spec back at the factory.
