Former co-drivers Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff made unfortunate contact during practice at Bathurst. Brake failure sent Luff into a spin and contact with Lowndes as they approached Griffin’s Bend. Both Commodores suffered significant rear-end impacts with Luff ending up on his side and out of the event.
9 MOUNT PANORAMA CIRCUIT 2008
Paul Weel had a lucky escape after he spun at the exit of Reid Park at Bathurst and was subsequently T-boned by Chris Pither. Thankfully, Pither just missed direct contact with Weel with the latter’s Commodore still suffering irreparable damage and forced out of the endurance classic.
8 PHILLIP ISLAND GRAND PRIX CIRCUIT 2002
Jason Bargwanna made contact with fellow Holden driver Greg Murphy on the run to Turn 1 and was bumped into the tyre barrier along the front straight. The barrier pitched Bargwanna into the air in a frightening roll, thankfully avoiding being hit by a following car after landing the correct way up, minus a few wheels.
7 SANDOWN INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY 2017
Sandown’s Turn 6 (Dandenong Road corner) has been a hotspot for accidents, the biggest of which involved Todd Hazelwood and Jonathon Webb. The Holden drivers made contact, sending Hazelwood into the tyre barrier at such speed that he was vaulted into the air and landed on his roof, ripping panels from the car.

1960 – 2020 TOP 60 DRIVERS
Who are the greatest drivers in the 60-year history of the Australian Touring Car Championship/Supercars? We rank the top 60 with an emphasis on best championship finishes, race-winning percentage and competitive longevity. Only drivers with top 10 championship finishes were considered, to emphasise championship performances over part-time or endurance campaigns. Also, results from the Bathurst 1000 and other endurance events were only factored in when they were part of the championship.
