Putrajaya Corporation plans for the long-term
The city of Putrajaya has come a long way since its conceptualisation in 1995. What used to be a collection of estates, is now Malaysia’s Federal Government Administrative Centre. What you see today, is a distant cry from when the area was predominantly covered with rubber and palm oil plantations.
Barely 22 years since its ground-breaking ceremony, Putrajaya has grown and matured into a vibrant, well-planned modern city equipped with world-class facilities. It houses close to 2.74 million square metres of government office spaces, generating employment for about 53,200 workers, and a day population close to 120,000 people. In fact, almost all the ministries and government departments previously located in Kuala Lumpur have now moved to Putrajaya.
Safe to say, Putrajaya has progressed remarkably well since its inception. Landmark government buildings now stand tall in the heart of the city, portraying Malaysia as a modern and developing country. The city’s world-class infrastructure and development can be attributed to its visionary Master Plan, where its approach places emphasis on sustainable development.
Although relatively new when compared to other established townships in the Klang Valley, Putrajaya has progressed rapidly over the years. The city has truly set a splendid precedent for other cities to emulate, where delegates from other countries regularly pay official visits to benchmark Putrajaya.
Under the helm of the Putrajaya Corporation, which was established with the purpose of managing and administering the city, it believes that more can be done to bring the city to greater heights.
Business Today speaks with Datuk Seri Haji Hasim Bin Haji Ismail, President of Putrajaya Corporation, on his take of the city ’s aspirations of becoming a world-renowned Smart City.
