Only DJs and hipsters buy vinyl records, right? Wrong. Kurt Loy, founder of the eBay for vinyl record lovers, tells us about the resurgence of vinyl in the age of Spotify, and dispenses tips for noob collectors.
The Moneymaker:
Kurt Loy, 37, founder of #vinyloftheday, an app where records collectors can share, buy or sell vinyl. “Everything [on the app] is related to records, music instruments and equipment, such as speakers and record players,” shares Kurt, who also deejays in his spare time. A low six-figure investment was put into launching the month-old app, which currently has 3,000 active users worldwide, while their Instagram account (@thevinylday), set up over three years ago, has 116,000 followers.
HIS HOME IS: A five-room flat in Buangkok where he lives on his own. “I spent $20,000 on renovations and $10,000 on furniture. I wanted my home to have a street wear retail space concept, with the skateboards and vinyl records. It’s simple, cosy and minimalistic.”
HIS RIDE IS: MRT and Uber.
WHAT'S IN HIS WALLET: Two credit cards, an IKEA membership card and a Krisflyer card. Kurt says: “I prefer cashless transactions as it doesn’t make me feel like I’m losing money (laughs).”
8 DAYS: Why launch an app for vinyl records when people are listening to music on platforms like Spotify?
