SICKENING images of dogs tortured to death sparked a call to end China’s notorious dog meat festival, but activists are still sceptic the ban will be implemented.
EVERY year without fail, the Lychee and Dog Meat Festival has seen thousands of dogs brutally butchered. The festival, which takes place in Yulin – a city in Guangxi province in China’s southwest – from June 2130, follows on a 400-year-old tradition of eating dog meat, although the festival itself only started in 2010. It is estimated that about 15 000 dogs are consumed during the 10 days.
