How To Cope With Postpartum Depression?

American-based musician John Legend and his wife Chrissy Teigen recently welcomed their little angel Luna. However, according to a news report, Chrissy suffered from postpartum depression post delivery. John pointed out that it was an ironic moment as on one hand they were celebrating a joyous event, but at the same time Chrissy was falling into depression. He added that it was a very challenging time for them as they did not understand what was wrong with her. Going on record, he said, “So many people go through this - they say one in nine, but there’s probably more than that. I think it was good for her to talk about it.”

Becoming a mother is the greatest joy in the world, as the old saying goes. Yet, in a strange irony of facts, according to a study, nearly 30% of new moms are actually depressed and unable to feel any connection with their babies. ‘SAVVY’ takes a closer look at postpartum depression (PPD) and helps you ensure that the condition doesn’t snatch away your precious new moments with your baby.

POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION NATTER

Ajita Seethepalli, Mumbai-based postpartum depression (PPD) consultant, tells us that PPD is a serious clinical condition wherein the suffering mother is not in control of her emotions and anxiety. “It is a type of moderate to severe depression which may occur soon after delivery or anytime during the first year post delivery. It shouldn’t be confused with baby blues, a condition which we will come to later,” she avers.
