The Right To Die?
Savvy|April 2018

Advocate Vandana Shah gives us an insight into the Supreme Court’s landmark judgement on expanding the right to life to incorporate the right to die with dignity.

The Right To Die?

landmark judgement is one that completely changes the legal landscape - be it the banning of triple talaq in the country or granting women a right to their father’s property. And the Supreme Court’s latest judgement - ‘The right to live and the right to die’ is a judgement that definitely fits the bill. This judgement legalises passive euthanasia and approves the ‘living will’ providing terminally ill patients the choice to opt for a dignified death by refusing life support.

THE RIGHT TO DIE WITH DIGNITY

The Constitution Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan delivered its verdict on a PIL filed by the NGO Common Cause.
