IN June, Britney Spears made an emotional plea to a judge asking the court to put an end to the conservatorship that put her father Jamie in charge of her life for the past 13 years. “I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive,” Britney said, revealing she’d been forced to take lithium and isn’t allowed to get married or have more children under her dad’s watchful eye. “I want my life back,” she begged Judge Brenda Penny. Soon after, Britney’s mom, Lynne Spears, submitted a formal request to have her ex-husband removed from his role as their daughter’s conservator. His behavior, she said, was “exhausting and terrifying” for Britney.
Her fears are real: Despite agreeing to step down as Britney’s conservator, Jamie has continued to assert his right to control. And in court papers from his Aug. 12 filing, the 69-year-old lashed out at Lynne, who divorced him in 2002, accusing her of being an absentee mother. More seriously, he made claims about his daughter’s mental state, insinuating that it is far worse than anyone knows.
“If the public knew all the facts of Ms. Spears’ personal life,” Jamie’s lawyers wrote in the filing, “not only her highs but also her lows, all of the addiction and mental health issues that she has struggled with, and all of the challenges of the conservatorship, they would praise Mr. Spears, not vilify him.”
Now, a bitter and vengeful Jamie is claiming that Britney is still a danger to herself. “Jamie is afraid Britney’s mental illness and her past issues with alcohol and drugs could rear their ugly heads again,” an insider tells Star. “He says only a few people are aware of what’s really going on behind closed doors.”
