IN her trademark looping scrawl that belied its startling contents, Princess Diana dashed off a note to her former butler Paul Burrell. Detailing her feelings of loneliness and depression in the wake of her 1992 separation from Prince Charles amid his affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles, Diana went on to make a shocking accusation in the 1995 missive. Charles, she asserted, was secretly plotting to have her killed so he could wed another alleged mistress, Tiggy Legge-Bourke, nanny to their two sons, Princes William and Harry. “My husband is planning ‘an accident’ in my car. Brake failure and serious injury in order to make the path clear for him to marry Tiggy,” she wrote. “Camilla is nothing but a decoy.”
Two years later, Diana would perish as a passenger in a black Mercedes speeding through a tunnel in Paris. For years, her eerily prescient note was kept secret, until 2005, when Burrell went public with it. Now, an explosive new report reveals that the Charles, heir to the British throne, was investigated by police that year, and that the former head of ScotlandYard, John Stevens, interrogated him at St. James’s Palace about his possible involvement in the Aug. 31, 1997 crash that took Diana’s life. “Charles is denying the allegations, he always has,” says an insider. “But the timing of having the details resurface now couldn’t be worse as he prepares to become king. The accusations against him,” notes the insider, “are some of the most shameful and disturbing in royal history.”
Diana’s Fears
In a note to her former butler, Diana said she was “longing for someone to hug me” before claiming Charles wanted her dead.
