Sixty Seconds With...
Guitar Techniques|November 2019
A minute’s all it takes to find out what makes a great guitarist tick. Before he jumped into his limo for the airport we grabbed a quick chat with Creed and Alter Bridge guitarist, and now solo artist, Mark Tremonti.

GT: Do you have a type of guitar pick that you can’t live without? Make, gauge and why?

MT: Dunlop 1mm nylon - it’s been my go-to pick for most of my life. It just feels right to me after all of this time. Also it contributes to my tone a lot. I feel that tone can change from pick to pick, but with the nylon it stays pretty consistent. I am always experimenting but find myself coming back to that pick all of the time.

GT: If you had to give up all your effects pedals but three, what would remain on your board?

MT: My Morley wah because it’s my favourite pedal of all time. I mainly use it when playing leads. G-Lab Smooth Delay SD1 - I have had a ton of different delays but I love this tone. The layout and design of the pedal perfectly fits my needs live! A Handwired Tube Screamer TS808HW - I have done shootouts on many overdrive pedals and for me, this pedal always wins. It’s a personal tastes thing, of course.

GT: Do you play another instrument well enough to be in a band? And if so, have you ever done it?

MT: I have tracked bass in the past, so I think I could get away with playing bass. Vocals of course from my solo project. I wouldn’t be able to hang on the drum kit though!

GT: If a music chart were put in front of you, could you read it?

MT: Ummm... no. Haha!

GT: Do guitar cables really make a difference? What make are yours?

MT: They do make a difference. Longer cables are warmer, and shorter are brighter, or so I have been told by tone gurus! Mine are Mogami customs and Planet Wave cables. I have a custom mute switch on the main cable to my guitar because I don’t use a floor tuner live and this way it cuts the signal when I switch guitars.
