NO RETURN
NEW MONDAY / ITV / 9PM / EP 1 of 4 / DRAMA
An ordinary family become embroiled in a legal nightmare while holidaying in Turkey in ITV’s much-anticipated new drama No Return.
Written by Danny Brocklehurst (Brassic, Ordinary Lies), the fourparter reunites Four Lives stars Sheridan Smith and Michael Jibson to play parents Kathy and Martin Powell, who are excited about an all-inclusive luxury break with their son Noah (Louis Ashbourne Serkis, the youngest son of actors Lorraine Ashbourne and Andy Serkis) and daughter Jessica (newcomer Lily Sutcliffe).
However, when 16-year-old Noah accepts an invitation to a beach party and is later arrested for a serious crime that he denies committing, Kathy and Martin find themselves battling an unfamiliar and expensive legal system as their child faces spending years in a Turkish prison.
Here, Sheridan, 40, and Michael, 41, tell us more about the series, which explores the themes of parenthood, justice and consent…
What’s your take on Kathy and Martin?
SHERIDAN Kathy’s a lioness! She’s a great character – fiercely loyal, fiercely protective and just someone I could relate to.
I’ve never read a script like this before. From the minute Noah is arrested, it’s four hours of intense high drama.
MICHAEL Kathy and Martin married very young. They don’t have particularly well-paid jobs, so this trip is their big holiday of the year, which they look forward to.
What happens in Turkey is the biggest challenge they, as a couple, will ever face. Everything about them is exposed to the world, and each other.
