Veteran actor and leading food writer Madhur Jaffrey is a master of reinvention, and she’s far from done. At 86, she’s only just kick-started her experiments with hip hop, finds Sonal Ved
An old, frail woman stirs a pot on the fire while being bullied by her son but she soon flips him off, slaps on an intense red pout and morphs into the badass grandmom who shows her middle finger too often and hits the streets singing, “I am the number one Nani, don’t fuck with me.” This is 86-year-old Madhur Jaffrey’s most recent screen avatar, where she’s the star of hip hop artist Mr Cardamom’s (Zohran Mamdani) latest music video, titled ‘Nani’. “People have fixed timings in their lives—like, I will do so-and-so at this age. I have never lived that kind of life. I had never rapped before, so I did it this year,” she says, her badassery even more potent off camera.
