Sales of rum in the UK have soared in recent years (topping £1 billion in 2018) as drinkers embrace sophisticated sipping varieties. Up until now, dark and golden rums have taken centre stage but every drinks cupboard also needs a quality white rum for cocktails.
Spiced rums tend to be on the sweeter side but Five Rivers Indian Spiced White Rum (£31.50/70cl, fiveriversrum.co.uk) is an elegantly dry affair, with plenty of botanical oomph. Aromatic, with notes of cardamom, coriander and cloves, and a peppery finish, the maker was inspired by English gin-making and it shows – it has an almost juniper-like character. Try it with tonic water, in a delicately spiced daiquiri or in a riff on a tom collins with lime juice, sugar syrup, sparkling water and ice in a highball glass.
