Dahlias: lift or leave?

Q I have several dahlias in the garden, some raised from seed this spring. Is it too late to dig them up and store them, or should I leave them where they are and hope for the best? Sonya Davenport, Bristol

A The dahlias we grow are tuberous plants bred from species native to mountainous areas of Guatemala and Mexico. They are perennial, but frost will kill the foliage and, if it penetrates the ground deeply enough, will freeze the tubers, too, which then rot in the wet soil. There are plenty of berries on the holly, but I wouldn’t like to predict what kind of a winter we’ll have.
