TV Star And Journalist Kate Garraway Reveals How Turning 50 Inspired Her To Rethink Her Lifestyle – And Why She’s Looking Better Than Ever!

I Want To Be Healthy Not Thin

She’s a familiar face on our TV screens five days a week as presenter of Good Morning Britain. But for Kate Garraway Sbeing co-host of an early morning live TV show means the working day is a gruelling 3am start for the busy mum of two. That means by the time she arrives for our morning photo shoot, she’s already done a seven-hour day! But she’s still full of beans, and, as we chat, we discover a portion of nuts en route and a cup of tea is enough to get Kate ready for action…

‘I was getting my energy from sugar and caffeine’

At this time in the day, Kate would usually be heading on to her second job, as a presenter for Smooth Radio, so how does she keep energised? ‘I focus on getting as much energy out of my body as I can,’ says Kate. ‘I think about food in terms of health and what it does to me.’

A major change came when she began researching healthy lifestyles for her book the Joy of Big Knickers. ‘I tried different popular diets and I realised, because of the crazy shifts I do, I regulated my energy with sugar bursts. I didn’t think I ate a lot of sugar but by 8am I’ve always had loads of chocolate.’ So Kate explains, ‘I stopped drinking caffeine and now I eat avocados obsessively because I found one of the diets was high in good fat, medium protein and zero sugar – which is a bit extreme for me. But eating avocados and low-sugar foods help keep my energy levels up. I always have a packet of nuts in my bag and I’ll usually have scrambled eggs when I’m sat in make-up.’
