Tough Act
When Cape Town’s Ratanga Junction first opened its doors in December 1998, hundreds of eager fans awaited their chance to experience the thrill of what was dubbed “The Wildest Place In Africa”. Snakelike queues formed at attractions such as the Cobra, Crocodile Gorge and Monkey Falls. Along with these adrenaline-boosting rides, audiences were treated to a daily stunt show, witnessing brave men and women performing acrobatics, puppetry, dance, and other mind-blowing stunts.

It was here that Grant Powell met Vernon Willemse. Grant was a character minder at the amusement park when one of the stunt performers was injured. As with any other production, the show had to go on. Not one to pass up a good opportunity, Grant quickly volunteered to take his place.

Vernon was already working as a stunt performer when Grant joined the ranks. When he was younger, Vernon would imitate the moves and fights he saw in movies. A teacher who witnessed his movements suggested he try out for the circus. After a successful audition, Vernon’s career began at what was then the Goodwood Showgrounds (now GrandWest Casino). When Ratanga Junction opened its doors, he moved across to join the show there.

TAKING THE PLUNGE

For four years the pair worked together, taking risks, learning skills and entertaining others. The training they received was invaluable. By the time they parted in 2002, they were equipped with enough skills to be picked up by other companies. A local stunt company discovered Grant, and he doubled an actor for the German film Der Kranichmann. The project launched his career as a stunt performer in films. “On every job that I did, I was introduced to someone who would offer me my next job,” he explains. Along with his stunt work, Grant honed his acting skills by performing in many theatre productions.
