“I AM A PROFESSIONAL glass artist and enjoy all the processes involved working with glass. It is about experimentation both with techniques and design, achieving items that are a representation of my thoughts and concepts. I love working with beads, particularly bigger beads, as they give me more of a canvas to create and apply detail to my work.”
Pauline has years of experience working with glass, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, Glass Major from the Chisholm Institute in Victoria in 1981, and working as a glassblower ever since. She trained at The Jam Factory Glass Workshop in South Australia, ran the Access Hot Glass Workshop at The Meat Market Craft Centre, and also lectured in glassblowing at RMIT University in Melbourne. Pauline’s glasswork is divine, and her work is commissioned from both Australia and overseas. She uses colour with the reflection of light in the glass, and favours dichroic glass, and gold and silver leaf.
In 1991 Pauline discovered a fascination for lampworking, and in 2003 she decided to follow her passion for glass beads. As she says: “I may have changed the percentage of furnace work to beads, but I have worked full time in glass and as a glass artist. I exhibit in galleries around Australia and my work collected is by the Victorian State Collection, Melbourne, The Corning Museum of Glass, New York, and, more recently, the Kobe Lampwork Collection in Japan.
Pauline has amassed quite a collection of glass objects over the years, including some incredible works from other artists from around the world. Her recent inspiration is drawn from the works of Brian Kirkveleit, and one of his small core vessels, with tiny murrini faces on it, is a treasured piece in her collection. Pauline has always had a fascination for African trade beads and ancient Egyptian glass, and says Brian‘s small core vessel reminds her of early Egyptian glass.
