Sociable, open-plan living is a dream coveted by many. For young professional couple Sara and Adam Dewhurst, improving the connections with their rural surroundings was just as important. Having relocated to a leafier part of Yorkshire to bring up their daughters, they were keen to enjoy the changing landscape, come rain or shine. ‘The house was a warren of rooms with a small, dark kitchen but the gardens took our breath away,’ says Sara.
Moving the kitchen to the back of the house and adding a generous full-width orangery-style extension wasn’t the speediest solution, but it was certainly worth it. The lengthy build, which took more than a year, gave Sara plenty of time to hone her vision for the kitchen. Having settled on a modern update of classic Shaker design, she created a moodboard on Pinterest to help narrow down her ideas and soon realised that all her favourite images came from Mowlem & Co. ‘Sara had a very clear idea on the overall look she wanted, but she just needed help with the layout and detailing,’ says designer Julia Brown, who was on hand to take Sara around Mowlem & Co’s showroom.
