John Mears has been at every Scottish Cup final of Celtic’s treble-winning successes.
THE accomplishments of the past two seasons will take some time to sink in for many Celtic fans. Saturday, May 19, 2018 will live long in the memory for Hoops supporters who will take great pride in declaring they were at Hampden the day the Double Treble was clinched.
To have witnessed a treble is special, but to have been there for every one of Celtic’s treble-winning Scottish Cup finals is something few fans can boast of. Eighty-two-year-old John Mears, however, is one of those who has achieved just that.
He grew up 60 miles from Paradise in Leven, Fife but the distance did nothing to lessen the pull he felt towards the club as a young boy. Eventually, at the age of 17, he attended his first Celtic game.
The year was 1953 and a Hoops team, which included names like Jock Stein, Bertie Peacock and Charlie Tully, outclassed the English champions at Hampden in the first round of the Coronation Cup.
