Postpartum depression is a very, very real a thing that can happen because of multiple reasons: lack of sleep, deficiencies that build up through pregnancy, or sudden hormonal changes. This alters brain chemistry in a lot of women and can trigger depression.
There are very few moms who actually do not go through low phases post-delivery postpartum, and they are the lucky ones.
A lot of the low energy depressive episodes can happen because now, suddenly, the mother has significant responsibility for another human being, from its genetic makeup to its sleep. Everything has to be managed by the mother. And in doing so, many new mothers completely lose sight of themselves, especially when they have to learn to communicate with the newborn and try to understand the baby's needs.
