We all love a vacation, rejuvenating in the Jacuzzis, hot pools, spas and other luxuries offered by the hotels and resorts. What we do not know is that these can also be a thriving hub for Legionella – a tiny flagellated bacteria that can wreak havoc. Legionellosis is actually the severe form of common pneumonia and usually presents itself in two forms: Legionnaire’s disease and Pontiac fever. The incubation period for both the diseases lies within 48 hours. If left untreated, Legionellosis has a mortality rate of 5 - 80%. Popularly known as the “silent killer”, this disease goes undiagnosed many a times due to the fastidious nature of the bacteria.
